Downtown Long Beach kicked off their Summer and Music Series (SAMS) with "Soul Motion" on Sunday evening, presenting a musical lineup that included former Beastie Boys keyboardist Money Mark, Animal Liberation Orchestra, Boogaloo Assassins, and Long Beach's own The New Fidelity with between-set gems from DJ Dennis Owens' golden graveyard of Soul. The event transformed Pine Avenue from the usual Sunday ghost town to a free community dance party, enjoyed not only by mod hipsters, but also parents, kids and even a gyrating homeless person or two. Many of the dining spots along Pine, including Smooth's (who usually close Sundays) were packed to capacity, much to the pleasure of organizers Fingerprints Records, Schooled In Song and the Downtown Long Beach Associates.
