Oktoberfest in Old World : Even though it's the middle of September, Oktoberfest is in full swing at Old World in Huntington Beach. The Spaten is flowing and the Bratwurst are on the grill, with the German oom-pah band encouraging audience participation in the Chicken Dance. The evening takes a surreal left-turn into David Lynch territory when the Diamond Sisters show up via Leisure World to display their acrobatic prowess. The debauchery continues Wed. thru Sun. till November 1st.

20th Annual Belmont Shore Car Show : The 20th Annual Belmont Shore Car Show was held on Sunday, showcasing the vintage hot rods, muscle cars and custom rides in a massive exhibition that streched from Livingston Drive to the Naples bridge. The proud owners could be found sitting near their classic cars, ready and willing to answer questions from the capacity crowd. Vendors sold automotive-related goods along with snacks and refreshments and local businesses were packed with shoppers.

Concordia 2009 at Di Piazza : The annual Mod party named Concordia (as a tribute to the 80's Concords Scooter Club) was held at Di Piazza on Saturday night. By late evening, the street was lined with Vespas and the club was packed with stylish mods who KNOW how to party! Soulful grooves, ranging from 60's R&B to reggae and ska were skillfully rendered by the Commotions, Kingston A Go-Go, the New Fidelity and the Suppressors to the receptive gyrating horde. DJ Kev, DJ Spot and DJ Rally kept the rock-steady beats pumping between acts.

Vans Belmont Shore Grand Opening : Skate Rats of all ages swarmed to Belmont Shore on Saturday for the grand opening of the new Vans Store. Johnny Layton, Christian Hosoi and Ray Barbee signed autographs, followed by a live acoustic performance by Barbee. The Vans "What If" skate bus was parked outside the store all day so the kids could shred on the mini-ramp. There was also plenty of free swag, including Vans wallets, hats, and sunglasses.

2009 Long Beach Crawfish Festival : Louisiana's Cajun music and cuisine were celebrated over the weekend at the 16th Annual Crawfish Festival in Rainbow Lagoon. The "largest Crawfish Festival outside of Louisiana" featured the best of Cajun, Zydeco and Blues music as well as fresh flown-in "mud bugs" prepared Louisiana-style and served up by Bristol Farms.

Wendy Ho at Hamburger Mary's : Hamburger Mary's hosted their "Starlette Review" on Monday night with several drag queens performing song and dance routines ranging from a human butterfly to a geisha girl, and the audience responding by stuffing dollar bills into their elaborate costumes. The "climax" came with the return of comedienne Wendy Ho, who slayed the crowd with raunchy jokes and sang some of her saucy serenades including "Bitch, I Stole Yo Purse" and "F--- Me".

Bouchees Bistro Burger Eating Contest : Bouchees Bistro (on 5th and LB. Blvd.) celebrated their 2nd anniversary with a mini-burger eating contest on Monday night. It was also Owner/Head Chef Anthony Zervas' birthday party, so there was plenty of delicious dessert. Last year's record of 13 burgers was shattered by newcomer Damon Wells (in pink), who consumed 18 1/2 burgers to capture the $200 gift certificate and a nifty "Winner" medal.

Homeland Cultural Center - Dancefest 2009 : Long Beach's award-winning Homeland Cultural Center celebrated "Dancefest 2009" at the Center Theater on Saturday. The free presentation featured diverse performances showcasing music and dancing from various cultures including Mexican, African, Hmong, Chamorro and even a taste of UK heavy metal (Black Sabbath's 'Iron Man' ) and a healthy dose of American B-Boy popping and locking. Celebrating it's 20th anniversary, Homeland offers cultural activities and musical programs for local youth and is a ground-breaking facility of the Long Beach Dept. of Parks, Recreation and Marine.

County Line 4th of July Pool Party : The SeaPort Marina Hotel (at PCH and 2nd) is hosting the new County Line Pool Party every weekend from 10am-8pm. On July 4th we enjoyed live music from three bands, a between-set reggae DJ, a full bar with $1 shot specials, delicious authentic BBQ ($1-$5), volleyball, beer pong and swimming in the newly renovated pool area. Entrance is $5 for hotel guests and $10 for the general public.

Soul Motion : Downtown Long Beach kicked off their Summer and Music Series (SAMS) with "Soul Motion" on Sunday evening, presenting a musical lineup that included former Beastie Boys keyboardist Money Mark, Animal Liberation Orchestra, Boogaloo Assassins, and Long Beach's own The New Fidelity with between-set gems from DJ Dennis Owens' golden graveyard of Soul. The event transformed Pine Avenue from the usual Sunday ghost town to a free community dance party, enjoyed not only by mod hipsters, but also parents, kids and even a gyrating homeless person or two. Many of the dining spots along Pine, including Smooth's (who usually close Sundays) were packed to capacity, much to the pleasure of organizers Fingerprints Records, Schooled In Song and the Downtown Long Beach Associates.

Guinness Record Shots Attempt at Shore Ultra Lounge : The Shore Ultra Lounge on 2nd and PCH hosted an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest group of people to take a shot simultaneously on Friday night. The fund-raising event was the brainchild of Nicholas Grond, Founder and CEO of the non-profit Don't Die Drunk organization, who are putting breathalyzers in local bars in an attempt to reduce the amount of alcohol-impaired accidents. By the time rolled around for the "shot heard round the world", the joint was jammed and KROQ's DJ Omar Kahn had the crowd into a frenzy, spinning the latest floor fillers from La Roux, Lady Ga Ga and GS BOYZ amongst others. Was the record broken? Who cares?! We're all drunk!

Barbie on Broadway Celebration : Broadway was pretty in pink on Sunday, June 19th, as local businesses celebrated Barbie's 50th Anniversary with "Barbie on Broadway". Most of the shops between Redondo and Loma had specials and activities based on the Barbie theme including: Vintage and collectible Barbie dolls from Joyce Cohrg at Sidney Spa Barbie manicures and pedicures at Kreme de la Kreme Nail Lounge Glamour Girl Headband Workshop at The Kids Are Alright Barbie art show at DDR Project art gallery There was even a special Barbie-cue chicken sandwich at Olives gourmet grocer
